  • INFANT MORTALITY

    The infant mortality rate continues to be one of the most widely used indicators of the overall health status of a community. At a 13.7 percent death rate per 1000 births, African Americans babies are dying at twice, and sometimes three times the rate of any other ethnic group.

  • SUBSTANCE ABUSE

    Alcohol mortality rates are highest for African-American men, even though alcohol use tends to be more moderate for African Americans than for whites or Hispanics. African Americans are more likely to report using illegal drugs on a weekly basis than any other ethnic group and have the highest rate of substance abuse initiation, which negatively impacts the structure of the family. African Americans represent 94% of drug abusers who inject multiple substances.
